8A- Solving The Problem

8A- Solving the Problem

  1. The opportunity at hand is a service, that is, providing direct flights to New York from the Gainesville Airport.  Currently, the Gainesville airport does not offer direct flights.  This gives college students who need to get home the option of taking an expensive connecting flight, experiencing a layover, or driving 2 hours to Orlando to get a slightly cheaper flight.
  2.  Quite simply, I think there are a few solutions to this problem.  However, I think they involve a lot of actions from multiple people and services.  In a perfect world, and if I had the power to do so, some of my solutions would be as followed:
  • Make the Gainesville Airport bigger so it can support bigger planes
  • Create more terminals
  • Talk to different airlines to see if they would provide flights from Gainesville, directly to New York
  • Understand that these are college students traveling to get home, and lower the price substantially in regards to the fact that the airport cannot offer direct flights which is a huge inconvenience
  • Provide planes solely for college students to make sure they are filled and safer

  1. I believe that the opportunity is here. I have first hand faced this airport and cost issue. If the Gainesville airport is built up, this area will benefit from it. My only concern is cost. I don't think Gainesville city officials will see this as a great concern.

  2. Hey Sarah,
I also believe an it would be very convenient if GNV had direct flights to more places. I’ve had to make the same drive because there weren’t any connections, regardless of price. I’ve seen military C17’s repeating taking off and landing exercises while at the range nearby and those seem comparable enough to larger jets so it might be less of a renovation issue. I think issue is more likely that the only airlines making a solid profit are those with single plane fleets flying high traffic routes. There might be a simpler opportunity in finding a way to completely fill a bigger plane to make a direct flight profitable.

  3. Sarah,
This seems to be an opportunity that would benefit many people if pursued. However, you are correct that it would take a lot of power an persuasion considering you are dealing with people. What kind of people do you think you would need to persuade? Do you think it would be worth while when you consider the cost and effort put forth? Would the benefits outweigh the costs?
