Assignment 27A- Reading Reflection No.3
1. What was the general theme or argument of the book?
- I chose to read Guy Kawasaki's novel, The Art of Social Media. He discusses how to get the most out of your time when using social media, or in other words, how to get the best bang for your buck. He gives hundreds of practical tips, advice, and different strategies for varying social media platforms. A lot of people think they know a lot about social media, however Guy makes it obvious that there is so much more to explore. If you want to optimize your profile, attract more followers, and post great content, this is definitely a book you should read.
2. How did the book, in your opinion, connect with and enhance what you are learning in ENT 3003?
- This book connected with and enhanced what I am learning in ENT. It did so by emphasizing the idea that your social media is representative of you. It is how people perceive you, it is practically your brand. This related to ENT in that as an entrepreneur you are not only selling your idea/product, but have to present yourself as someone who is credible and trustworthy. People will not buy your product or use your service if they are not comfortable with your reputation.
3. If you had to design an exercise for this class, based on the book you read, what would that exercise involve?
- If I had to design an exercise for this class based on the book I read, my exercise would definitely involve social media. I would intertwine branding in the exercise, and have my peers create an Instagram page or Facebook page in which they were promoting their own credibility and self. I think this exercise would show people how important social media is, and how you can use it not only for your social life but for your business as well.
4. What was your biggest surprise or "aha" moment when reading the book? In other words, what did you learn that differed most from your expectations?
- My "aha" moment occurred when I read that people who post others content usually succeed more than those people who spend time creating their own. When content is popular and or being liked, it is okay to share that pages picture, tweet, etc. Followers solely follow accounts for the content, they do not care whether or not it was constructed by you or not. Otherwise they would not follow you.
Hi Sarah! I also read this book and found it extremely interesting as well. Guy does an amazing job portraying the importance of social media in today's society. I like the example you gave for an exercise. It is similar to my example, but it involves self promotion rather than company promotion. Learning how to promote oneself is the first step in promoting the company. Also, I liked your 'aha' moment. That also stood out to me because I never believed that fact to be true!
ReplyDeleteHey Sarah,
ReplyDeleteThis is such an interesting pick, especially it seems like there have been some clear favorites for the reading reflections. Your summary is very concise and does a great job of summing up the book it seems. For the second part, tying the themes in the book to social capital in lecture is a good connection point and one that we never really covered making it even better.
