3A – Your Entrepreneurship Story
3A – Your Entrepreneurship Story
This past summer, I was exposed to entrepreneurship. I partook in an internship at REIL Capital, as a marketing specialist and capital specialist. The company is involved in the cash advance industry, and was started by my boss, Ian Samlin. The interesting thing about Ian is that he majored in sports management. Yet, he knew once he left college he was capable of being his own boss, in fact he wanted to be his own boss. With determination and the aspirations to succeed, he built his company, REIL Capital, from the ground up. The business, being a year old, has consumed Ian's life up to this point. He worked tirelessly to gain knowledge on the industry, create a team, and most importantly, a product. The company provides cash advances to small businesses, mom and pop shops, and other business owners to help their businesses reach their maximum potential.
When given the opportunity to work for a start up as my first internship, I was really nervous. I knew my work would be critical. Now looking back, I couldn't have picked a better place to intern at. Ian's ambition is inspiring, and the fact that the company is a start up made my work feel more worthy. I helped design their new website, am currently a writer for their blog, and even gained telemarketing experience after speaking with different clientele. I wouldn't trade my experience for the world, and I am so glad I was able to shadow someone who in my eyes, is much more than an entrepreneur, but a successful business man. I definitely plan to leave an impact on REIL, as I continue to work for Ian and his company. I hope to follow in Ian's footsteps one day as well, and become an entrepreneur.
Why I enrolled in ENT?
ENT3003 was recommended to me by my advisor. I was looking for a class that I could find a potential minor in, and one that could peak my interest as I focus immensely on finance simultaneously. Since watching the first few lectures, I definitely think I made the right choice and am excited to see how the class progresses. I could definitely see myself minoring in entrepreneurship in the future. I am not very knowledgeable in this subject besides my past internship experience, and am eager to learn more.

It's great that you had a wide range of experiences at your internship. I too had been given a lot of opportunities to do many different tasks for my internship at a cryptocurrency exchange. I think having various experiences and wanting to know more helps is very important when starting your own business.
ReplyDeleteAs for your education path, if you go into finance, having some programming background is very useful because of analytics. You can probably find out more from recruiters.
It's wonderful to see that you had the opportunity to intern under such an amazing mentor. From my own experiences, I have found that entrepreneurs are a special breed of driven and focused individuals who are willing to dedicate their lives to their business. It is so inspiring to see this because often times when I think of starting my own, I see all of the pitfalls and difficulties that would be presented.
ReplyDeleteHi Sarah,
ReplyDeleteI think what you have going for you is really exciting! It must be really interesting growing with a business that started from scratch and being an eyewitness to the growth from the inside of the company. I think a minor entrepreneurship would be highly beneficial in combination with a major in finance. You would be knowledgeable in two very important parts of business. I hope you enjoy your journey!
Hey Sarah,
ReplyDeleteI think it’s really interesting that you were willing to roll the dice and work for a startup. Knowing your work would be mission critical must’ve been exciting. It really is interesting that Ian was willing to start a financial business with a degree in sports management. He’s a testament to the fact that hard work can get you where you wanna go. As boss like that would be so valuable to learn from.
